Make your own Polymer
Now you can take a shot at making your own polymer. You are going to make Silly Plubber. You should NOT eat this. You also want to measure the ingredients exactly. Otherwise your Silly Plubber might not form the polymer chains.
Materials:
1 teaspoon (5ml) Borax*
1 cup (250ml) water
2 small plastic cups
spoon
2 tablespoons (30ml) white glue
Snack size baggies
Newspapers
*Your mom or dad can find Borax in the detergent isle of your local grocery.
How To:
- Put the borax and the water in one of the cups and stir with the spoon until dissolved.
- Put the white glue into the other cup.
- Add 1 tablespoon (5ml) of the borax-and-water mixture to the white glue.
- Stir well with the spoon until the mixture starts to form a solid clump of plubber.
- Take the mixture out of the cup and knead it in your hands.
What characteristics do you notice about this silly plubber? How is it similar or different from other fluids we know such as water?
Another Slimy Recipe
If you just can't find Borax at the store, here's another slimy recipe.
Materials:
H2O (water)
Corn Starch - dry (this you can definitely find at your grocery store)
Mixing bowl
Newspaper
How To:
- Lay out some brown paper bags or newspaper on your work area.
- Measure ½ cup of Corn Starch and add to the bowl.
- Add ¼ cup of water SLOWLY to the bowl and stir mixture with a spoon or your fingers.
This slime has very weird characteristics. It will go quickly from being a powder to being weird slime to being liquid. After you add the ¼ cup of water, you may need to add a little more water to get the weird slime. Add the water a few drops at a time.
This slime is really runny. But when you try to squeeze it, punch it or apply any other pressure to it, what happens? See for yourself!
