Working for Yourself If you're 14 or younger, or you have a cool idea, you can work for yourself. There are many things that you can do to make money! Try to think of a skill that you have. Is there something that you can make? Do you help out around the house? Here are some ideas for things you can do! Babysitting The most common job young girls have is babysitting. If you have a younger brother or sister, than you already have the experience to be a babysitter. You also need to know all the rules about safety and also things like what happens when there is a fire or tornado. Babysitters watch young children when the parents go out. Sometimes you will be responsible to make sure they eat dinner and they are in bed before their bedtime. It's up to you (and the parents) what age you feel that you can babysit - if you don't feel comfortable around a baby, make sure to say that. Write down in a notebook your babysitting schedule, and the contact information for the family. Also write down your rate and how much you made from babysitting each time you do it. The best way to get families to babysit for is to network! Networking means that you tell your friends and their friends about you babysitting. You can make your own business cards, even your own website, to get the word out. Some families will only hire babysitters that their friends recommend, so be sure you tell everyone you know! Selling Something Have you learned how to make something really cool that you think you could sell? If you do, there a couple of ways you can sell your product! We'll use bracelets as an example. The easiest way to sell things is to sell them to your friends at school. Be sure to decide on what you think is a fair price, and wear your bracelet to school. Tell your friends that you made it and that you are selling them! You can even take orders if you want to make a specific colored bracelet. The most important thing is to stay organized. Be sure to write down in a notebook who bought the bracelets from you, the date, their order, and how much they paid you. This way you have a record in case something comes up. It will also help you when you're trying to keep the orders straight when your friends all buy it from you! Another thing you can do is sell your bracelet at craft fairs or something similar. A lot of times, there will be events where sellers are allowed to set up a booth. You will probably have to get your parents to help you with this. You'll need to make a lot of bracelets before the event so you don't run out. You'll also need some cash to make change when a bracelet is purchased.
