How to Get A Job
Working for an Employer
There are a few job options for 14 - 16 year olds to get a job. Applying and getting a job can be frustrating, but if you try hard you can get one!

The best place to start looking for a job is in the newspaper or on a website. Since you haven't worked before, you won't have a lot of the experience that companies want, so try to find something that matches what you can do and what you like to do. Probably the best job option for you is to work at a restaurant.

No matter what job you find, you have to do a few things to try to get the job such as contacting the employer and doing the job interview.

Contact the Employer
The first thing you need to do is find a job that you can do! Check the employment section in the newspaper. It's sorted by the type of job. The best bets to start with are "General" and if there is a "Restaurant" category. Some newspapers have their classifieds online where you can search with a keyword. This will save you time if you have to find a job in your neighborhood or area.

Sometimes, you may not find something in the paper or online, but you know there is a place nearby. You can always go into the restaurant and see if they have applications. Take the application home with you and fill it out. When you're done, bring it back and give it to the manager there.

Job Interview
If you've contacted someone through the newspaper or you bring an application in person, be sure to dress nicely. Also, be sure to be on time if you set up an interview.

When you meet the employer for the first time, remember that first impressions are very important! Answer their questions politely, and be sure to mention why you think they should hire you. Be up front about the hours you can work. Be sure to thank them when the interview is done, and be patient if they don't tell you immediately if you got the job! They will contact you and let you know.

Good luck!
