Brace Face Diary

December 1, 2001
Well, I finally convinced my best friend "Angelina" to share her headgear story. I promise you don't want to miss this!

----------------

As a former Brace Face girl, I can relate to Julie's new adventures that have come with her new braces. However, I had braces over 10 years ago and the technology has changed quite a bit. I wore my braces from the end of my 5th grade year until the eighth grade. I know that seems like a long time, but believe me, my teeth before braces were horrible. I had an overbite (that's a nice way of saying that my top teeth stuck out over my bottom teeth). My overbite was so bad that I couldn't put both my lips together. People used to call me "Bugs" as in Bug Bunny. Don't laugh- every time I watch Looney Tunes a tear comes to my eye...

Anyway, besides the fact that my braces were bright, shiny and silver (now you can get clear braces, like Julie), part of my orthodontic treatment included the dreaded HEADGEAR!!! If you haven't seen one, it looks like you are wearing a big metal hanger around your head. Believe me there is no hiding it. Well, I was supposed to wear it eight hours a day. You know what that means- I had to wear to school. As if junior high boys can't be mean enough without having something that obvious to tease you about. I wore it and just tried to smile.

Well, I am so glad that I did! The summer between my eighth and ninth grade year, I got my braces off. Needless to say, the same guys that made fun of me while I wore my headgear wanted to "hang out" after I got my braces off. You can imagine what I told them "NO WAY". Because I was the same person and you know that it is what is on the inside that counts.

So smile proud all you brace face girls across the country and remember one day having your braces will soon pay off. And if you ever see someone wearing a headgear try not to stare... : )

*names have been changed to protect the PBF (previous brace face)

----------------

Thanks Angelina for sharing! Be sure to check back next time - I get my braces tightened for the first time (YIKES!)

Julie
