Things have been pretty busy in Braceland!! I go next week to get my FINAL x-rays for my teeth to see how everything looks underneath my gums. If my roots and everything look OK, then they will start setting my teeth. This means that they won't move them anymore, but they will keep them in the same place for a few months to help the teeth and gums become stronger- so they can stay straight once the braces are off.
Check out the picture of me getting my braces tightened by Timberli, one of my favorite orthodontic assistants at the orthodontist's office. She is always fun to talk to, which helps make the time go by super fast!
This month I got a question from a soon to be braceface, and wanted to share it with everyone. I get asked this question a lot….
I read Julie's brace diary entry and that really made me think. When I went to the dentist, they said I will have to get braces in a year or so. I'm kind of scared because my cousin and my friend have braces and they say it hurts. My other friend wore a retainer and took it out when she ate. Can a retainer do the same work braces can do?
Here is what I had to say…
There is nothing to be afraid of when it comes to getting braces. They can be a little uncomfortable at first, but they are not unbearable. Your teeth don't really hurt, but your gums can be a little sore for a few days after you get them on or tightened. (but it is a great excuse to have tator- tots and ice cream shakes for lunch!!) Sometimes the wires and brackets can poke your mouth inside, but the orthodontist gives you wax to cover them up (and it makes the pain go away nearly immediately).
Retainers are usually used after you get your braces off to keep your teeth straight. Since every tooth needs to be aligned and moved at different rates, retainers can't usually straighten your teeth. The good thing is that braces are temporary! They are becoming more common, and you will definitely be glad you got them when you were young. I have really enjoyed having my braces and really like watching my teeth move and my smile get straighter. Good luck with everything!!
Thanks for the email! It is great to know that people actually read my diary!!
Until next time!
